The diagrams used to help represent consumer shopping baskets, the pension deficit or migration are ana-chronistic, they hark back to the nineteenth century political allegories. Whether pictographs or simple bar or pie charts, their abstraction all display an impotence that is touching. We took examples of diagrams gleaned from newspapers, school text books and official publications and used them to reconstruct the history of migration in the Federal Republic of Germany.
What we are seeking, therefore, is a conceptual critique of the ways in which migration is presented, pursuing the icons and symbols back to their origins and examining them with regard to content they themselves are unaware of. (Harun Farocki)

About Harun Farocki:
1944 born in Nový Jicin (Neutitschein), in German-annexed Czechoslovakia. 1966-68 attended the Deutsche Film- und Fernsehakademie Berlin (DFFB). 1966 to Ursula Lefkes. 1968 birth of his daughters Annabel Lee und Larissa Lu. After teaching posts in Berlin, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Manila, Munich and Stuttgart Farocki took up a visiting, professorship at the University of California, Berkeley from 1993-1999. 2001to Antje Ehmann. Farockis has made close to 90 films, including three feature films, essay films and documentaries. 1976 In Basel, he staged Heiner Müller's plays The Battle and Tractor together with Hanns Zischler. Since 1966: numerous publications. 1974-1984: editor and author of the magazine Filmkritik (München). Since 1966: collaboration with other filmmakers (as script writer, actor and producer). Since 1990: numerous exhibitions and installations in galleries and museums. Since 2004 visiting professor at the Akademie für Bildende Künste, Vienna, Austria.
